When you first start playing CoD4’s multiplayer you will only have a handful of classes available to you. Those are your default classes and will always be there. You can not change anything (weapons, perks, etc) when it comes to the default classes. These five classes have fairly balanced setups that will allow beginners to quickly adjust to how the game plays.
The default classes are as follows:
Assault
The assault class is always a great class to start out with. The M16A4 is a powerful rifle and easy to control due to its burst shooting. Having the grenade launcher attachment also helps ease players into the game by giving them an alternative way to get some kills. The stopping power perk works well with any weapon, but on the M16A4 it really helps if you tend to shoot from a good distance away. Extreme condition is another very helpful perk for both beginners and advanced players alike. It’s much more difficult to hit a fast moving target. The frag/stun grenades are the standard package and work well when thrown back to back.
Strengths: Medium to high damage with weapons. Able too shoot accurately from a good distance away. Can run long distances.
Weakness: Easily detected on radar.
Tips: 1.) Don’t hesitate to use the grenade launcher. It’s a powerful attachment and can quickly clear out small areas.
2.) When shooting the M16A4, aim for the chest or neck and the recoil should carry bullets 2 and 3 of the burst right to your enemy’s head
Spec Ops
Spec Ops is the ultimate beginner’s class. The MP5 is extremely accurate, but with the Steady Aim perk active it becomes downright deadly when shooting from a medium to close range. The Sonic Boom perk helps to add to the C4 and frag grenade’s blast damage making it a bit easier to use both. The silencer on the pistol helps to keep you off the enemies radar while shooting your USP .45.
Strengths: Extremely accurate at close to medium range even when shooting form the hip, high explosive damage and the ability to go undetected on radar when using the pistol.
Weakness: Weapon damage is weak to medium and poor accuracy from long distances.
Tips: 1.) Make sure to put your C4 to good use. A well placed C4 pack can stop enemies from advancing or completing an objective.
Heavy Gunner
Have trouble aiming? Blowing through an entire clip of ammo before your enemy is dead? Getting frustrated with dying in two hits? Well if you answered yes to any or all of these questions than this is the class for you. The M249 S.A.W. light machine gun is perfect for anyone who may need those extra bullets to finish off an enemy. It’s an incredibly powerful gun at close and medium range and can cut through both bone and concrete like a hot knife through butter. Certainly having the deep impact perk helps a bit with that. The juggernaut perk gives you a few extra seconds of life which is hopefully long enough for you to kill your enemy before they kill you. The three extra stun grenades work nicely with the M249. The stun grenades slow down your enemy giving you ample time to mow them down. Slow’em and mow’em!
Strengths: High weapon damage at medium to long range, high rate of fire, large ammo belt, extra health and can shoot through walls with ease.
Weakness: Long reload times, easily detected on radar and lots of recoil when using the M249 S.A.W.
Tips: 1.) Use your stun grenades wisely. A well placed stun grenade can daze an enemy and give you ample time to cut them down with your S.A.W.
2.) Keep a close watch on your radar. If you see an enemy on the other side of a wall or object than let the bullets fly. The deep impact perk will help you cut right through any wall or object to get a blind kill.
Demolitions
The demolitions class is a bit of a mixed bag. While the shotgun works wonders at close range it is almost completely useless at medium to long distances. The shotgun has a lot of kickback so it can only be recommended to players who have decent aim. If you miss at close range than more than likely you will not survive. For long range fights however there are 2 rockets you have available to you. These work great for shooting down enemy helicopters, blowing up cars, or sending your opponents arms and legs flying to opposite sides of the map. The sonic boom perk works beautifully in conjunction with the rocket launcher to increase it's damage. Extreme conditioning will help you get in close to your enemy for the easy kill shot. If you can’t seem to get in close than drop a smoke grenade and make your escape.
Strengths: High weapon damage at close range, can run long distances and RPG’s make it easy to take down enemy helicopters.
Weakness: Not effective at medium to long range, slow rate of fire and easily detected on radar.
Tips: 1.) Sprint as much as you can. Use the extreme conditioning perk to get up close to players before you take a shot.
2.) Use your rockets to blow up vehicles with enemies near them. If the enemy calls in a helicopter than hit it with a well placed RPG to knock it out of the sky.
Sniper
Who doesn’t love the thrill of shooting someone in the head from clear across a map. While many other first person shooters feature a sniper class, CoD4 takes the class to the next level. All snipers in CoD4 wear a guile suit which helps them blend in nicely to their surrounding environment. So much so that you may find yourself practically standing on top of an enemy without even realizing they were there until you catch them moving a bit from the corner of your eye.
The M40A3 sniper rifle is an extremely powerful gun. In most cases it will only take one well placed shot to drop an enemy. Add stopping power and deep impact on top of an already powerful gun and you might as well just page the grim reaper because he’s going to have some company coming his way. The silencer on the pistol is an excellent addition to any snipers arsenal as its key to staying off radar especially if someone is close by. If someone does manage to get too close for comfort just throw down a flash grenade and knife the poor soul.
Strengths: High weapon damage, accurate from long distances, hard to spot in outdoor environments and can remain undetected by radar when using the pistol.
Weakness: Long reload time when using the M40A3 rifle, hard to use rifle indoors and weak damage at close range.
Tips: 1.) When shooting the M40A3 rifle make sure to steady your scope to avoid missing the target.
2.) Always aim for the upper body or head. Both will result in a one shot kill.
3.) If you see danger approaching, have your flash grenades ready as well as you pistol. Using the rifle at close range will almost always result in your death.
4.) Use the environment to your advantage. Go prone in tall grass or crouch in bushes to stay hidden from enemies while you line up shots.
Create a class
Upon reaching rank 4, which will probably only take you 20-30 minutes of play time, the option to create-a-class will open up for you. Unlike the default classes which can not be changed the create-a-class classes can be whatever you want them to be. You have full control over what weapons, weapon skins, weapon attachments you want to use, grenades you want to carry, which perks you feel best suit your needs and you even get to name the class you’ve created. You have five open slots to use for these custom classes. You are able to change options for these classes as long as you are not already in a match. The create-a-class classes will be your bread and butter once you start to get deep into the game and start figuring out what combinations of weapons and perks work best for you.
That concludes the classes section of this guide. Make sure to test out every class as each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Once you open up the create-a-class option don't be afraid to be creative with your classes. Keep changing options until you find what works best for you.
