Without maps there would be no game and with too few maps things would get boring real fast. Luckily CoD4 features 16 multiplayer maps right out of the box. Not to mention there are also mod-tools on the way shortly after the games release. Before we know it we’ll have more maps than we know what to do with.
In this section we are going to take a look at the 16 maps currently boxed with CoD4. A good solider knows his surroundings and hopefully this will help you to become that soldier. Also upon release of the full game. There are currently 3 maps reviewed in this section. The others will be added soon.
Vacant
Vacant is one of the smallest and most intense maps. There are about 2-3 (sometimes more) entry ways into each room and hallway which forces you to rely heavily on your radar if you want to survive longer than 10 seconds. Only a few of the larger rooms and areas outside the warehouse provide you with decent places to duck for cover. Vacant is pretty much a non stop frag fest.
Tips: 1.) Stay away from using sniper rifles unless you never miss or it’s a slow match like search & destroy, with a small amount of players. Once inside the building sniping via your scope can very easily get you killed.
2.) The UAV jammer perk comes in very handy on Vacant as smart enemies with rely heavily on their radar.
3.) Stay low. This especially goes for objective-based games like Search & Destroy. Staying low will keep you off the radar and allow you to hide behind any one of the many objects around the bomb targets.
4.) Be prepared to knife. Make your melee button easily accessible as you will use it several times while playing this map.
Crash
Crash is a mid-sized map where-in a military helicopter has crashed right in the middle of town. Crash contains war torn buildings and back alleys which lead to intense indoor fire fights or sniping from atop one of the many rooftops. The whole map gives you the feeling that you are safe no where. There is always a way for someone to sneak up behind you and take you down.
Tips: 1.) Grenades and explosive are very useful in this map. Do not hesitate to toss grenades into any of the surrounding buildings.
2.) Keep your eye to the sky. There are a lot of accessible rooftops on Crash. If you do not pay attention to them you will end up with a bullet hole in the top of you skull.
3.) Car bombs. Your C4 might be strong enough to take down a couple of guys if placed well enough, but place C4 on any one of the cars in Crash and you may be able to take down most of the opposing team with just one click of a button.
4.) Don’t be afraid to flash. Normally I’d say keep it in your pants, but in this case whip out those flash grenades and toss them into a building before entering. This especially goes for the building containing bomb target A.
Overgrown
Overgrown is a fairly large map and leans more towards open areas with a large ravine in the center and a fairly open field complete with a tractor and hay bails near a barn. It also lends itself nicely to sniping as there are plenty of places to lay low and take cover in the grass via guile suit. You’ll need to keep on your toes and keep moving or you will most likely be taken out from a distance.
Tips: 1.) Learn to snipe. Whether it’s with an actual sniper rifle or an assault rifle, learning how to shoot accurately over long distances can make all the difference on this map. Remember assault rifles are more accurate when fired in few round burst. I highly recommend the M16A4.
2.) This isn’t a game of golf. Lying in tall grass is actually a good thing. Even if you don’t have a guile suit it can still be hard to see someone in the grass from a distance.
3.) Become a window jumper. Jumping through windows will save you a lot of time getting to specific locations including that of bomb targets. It also can allow you to sneak up on your enemy which may be covering a doorway.
4.) The attic isn’t just for moth balls and grandma's old photo albums. The attic in the house next to bomb target B can be used to get the upper hand and defend the target or even help defend a planted bomb. From the attics many windows and holes you can easily see almost an entire side of the map. Placing a claymore at the top of the ladder coming up from the outside of the house and also a claymore at the top of the stairs leading up from inside the house can buy you some more time to focus on other sections of the map. You won’t have to spend time worrying about who is trying to sneak up on you.
